Marine Bioluminescence

Marine bioluminescence is an audio clip designed to be a part of an educational podcast: "The Museum." The narration challenges students to use their imagination while being immersed in a strange world of the deep ocean full of unique creatures.

While some may have seen these creatures in cartoons, they likely don't know why these creatures illuminate. If they have never seen marine life with bioluminescence, the narrative connects to their own prior knowledge of lightning bugs.

Target Audience:

2nd to 5th Grade

Learning Goals:

  • Students will be able to summarize bioluminescence

  • Students will be able to connect bioluminescence to this own experiences with lightning bugs

Learning Theory:

By having students close their eyes and imagine diving into the ocean, the learner creates a visual representation in their mind while listening to the narrative.  Cognitve learning focuses on building on past experience. Learners are directed to think about where they may have seen similar events in order to better understand the concept. This prior knowledge will lead to learners creating better mental representations while imagining in an audio medium.
