MoxieReader
MoxieReader is a blended literacy program for school and home that digitizes and personalizes independent reading. I contributed as a founding team member during Startup Weekend (winner of best business model). I joined again as a product specialist implementing a reading response assessment feature into MoxieReader. With my design thinking and reading literacy expertise, I led the product roadmap for this new feature.
Overview
Research
Based on our interviews with teachers, we discovered that they saw benefits in merging their individual reading logs with comprehension evaluations. My role involved researching effective reading comprehension strategies and reflection techniques. Using our findings, we developed a new feature that enables teachers to evaluate their student's progress and encourage meaningful reflection. Our aim was to ensure seamless assessment and impactful reflection. Teacher assessment wanted the option to score for either quality or completion.
Ideation
After conducting research, our team initially attempted to develop a reading response system that could generate essential reading questions based on themes and genres. However, upon testing with teachers via lofi prototyping (Wizard of Oz method), we discovered that the design was overly complex and inconsistent for every book.

Therefore, we decided to shift our focus to signposts and sentence starters as our assessment strategy. This approach provided prompts that were broad enough to apply to both fiction and nonfiction stories, while still promoting high-level critical thinking among learners.
For our MVP, we opted to create open-ended book reviews as student responses. This allowed teachers to have content flexibility while we validated the effectiveness of our signposting and sentence starters approach.

Prototype
With the existing booking logging process already implemented. We focused heavily on how we can seamlessly implement this new feature into the design. Our approach was to attempt to seamlessly add the response to the current workflow.
